@Gerald Thomas, I heard TM will not implement this bandwidth cap for NOW for all Unifi packages. But, TM will monitor the users usage from time to time. I don't know if the service is better than Streamyx. But, if we see from the past, Streamyx itself takes time to get very stable with the connection. From this, I can expect, Unifi too will take time to get stable. If stability is your concern, I'll consider take Streamyx over Unifi for now. I don't need 5Mbps, I need stable connection and 1Mbps Streamyx is more than enough.

@William, haha..itu test je bro.. :D 1 orang je pakai dalam dunia..memang laju la..

I read about TM's new broadband service. I was hoping to get the 5mbps until I read about the cap on downloads. TM should offer unlimited downloads for that price. Will the service be better than Streamyx ?

@Jonathan Huang, we can't compared between wireless and wired connection in term of stability, sure the wired connection will win.

The only reason why this happen in Malaysia because of monopolization of internet service provider by TM, unlike in Singapore which has different ISP with their own cable connection etc. But in Malaysia, as far as I know, other ISPs like Celcom Broadband, Maxis Broadband etc use connection from TM. Means, the facility they use is from TM. They are not using their own facility, that's why Celcom BB, Maxis BB and others wireless broadband ISPs have implemented bandwidth limit to all their wireless broadband plans unlike Streamyx who own the facility.

Maybe these situations are not the same in Singapore, that's why they can offer better broadband service. Another factor is because of the area. Malaysia is large compared to Singapore, so the ISPs there can focus more on improving their broadband better because of small coverage are compared to Malaysia.

But, I really hope Malaysia broadband can be improved better and more stable. It is a shame to know that most investors run from Malaysia due to slow internet connection. Btw, it is a hope too to see this HSBB - High Speed Broadband project achieve its target. I've heard some rumors said, the 10Mbps package for home user will cost you up to RM500/monthly. Who are going to pay that much? I hope these rumors are wrong. Let's wait and see. :)

Our PM announced recently on Science and Technology conference that they will upgrade the internet connection in Malaysia to be utilising Fibre Optics, with connection speed from 10Mbps to 1Gbps. Starting of the project will be between 2011 to 2020. I doubt we can see that in the near future. Even if come out with such connnection, I bet we will be paying to our neck too......... My friend from Singapore told me from next year onwards they will be using Fibre Optics connection in household(fully operational). Now the Singapore Government already started working on the infrastructure for the coming conversion. The average speed in Singapore now is 10Mbps. But from next year onwards, they will be seeing 1Gbps. Haiz...... When will my Malaysia be really boleh?

note: Recently just POTONG, but it isn't really that great. Sigh.

@Jem, agree with you. I don't know how Malaysia could achieve what so-called Wawasan 2020 if this is the way they treat the technology.

Anyway, I know the company you mentioned above. Their offer is quite great but unfortunately, they are not in my coverage. Hope they will widen their coverage soon. Thanks for sharing the information here, Jem.

I have been recommended to try
Optical Communication Engineering S/B
19, Jalan Semangat, Petaling Jaya
Malaysia 46200
Tel : 03 79578730
Fax : 03 79570669

They appear to market their services under name of Sentralfon
http://www.sentralfon.com.my/
Charges are RM77, RM88 and RM99/month for various (FTTH) fibre optic to the home services and you will need to pay for a media converter. They also have RM66/month for ETTH service (ethernet to the home) which claims 2Mbps traffic speed and unlimited usage.

Malaysian broadband services are like Malaysian taxis... unreliable and slow, about 8 years out of date. They are making us a laughing stock in the region.
Telecom and Transport ministers urgently need to get stuck in and force improvement to these services.

Footnote: Thailand has taxis that are cheap to use, plentiful, courteous and honest. The new fleets are equipped with Toyota Altis. Note the taxi meter flagfall is RM3.50 equivalent. However their broadband also sucks!

I'm not sure about that, but i've heard about it before where there is limit for bandwidth usage per month. Anyway, if they said they limit the bandwidth, then what's does it means for UNLIMITED? If the usage still limited by the bandwidth then, what's the point to have UNLIMITED? Or they just want to attract more subscribers by using this kind of tactic? I know there not so many of broadband users will read the TOS because the think it just nothing. But something about this, I mean the bandwidth limit shouldn't be included in TOS but it should be clearly stated that, this package and that package have this much of limited bandwidth. That's what I think la.. As a consumer we need to know as detail as possible about what we are going to subscribe.. And something about bandwidth limit should be clearly stated.
