Friendster Scheduled Maintenance Effect: Friends List Lost
Salam and hello to all. Do you have a Friendster account? Have you ever log in into your Friendster account lately? If you do, you might notice that there’s some error occurred on your Friendster’s profile. For your information, Friendster has run their regular scheduled maintenance on 14 November 2008 till 15 November 2008. Its about 2 days of maintenance and its rarely for Friendster to take up to 2 days for regular maintenance because based on previous maintenance, they usually took about few hours.
Ok here is the problem that I want to highlight. I logged in into my Friendster account on 15 November 2008 and I already know that Friendster currently undergoing maintenance mode on 14 November. But seems it already 15 November which about 1 day after the maintenance mode, I thought that Friendster already can be accessed as usual. But I’m wrong, connection to Friendster is still too slow but luckily I still can log in. For the first time, I didn’t noticed anything but when I tried to view one of my friends profile, it shows that I didn’t add them as my friend yet. But their profiles are already in my friends list. I started noticed something weird when I saw my total friends list on my profile is only 9! 9 from 1xx! Where all the rest of them? My first thought is it might be something to do with the latest Friendster maintenance. I tried to view more profiles of my friends, but the result turns the same. I can’t view their profiles since most of my friends set their profiles as private and can’t add them back since I already forgot their emails and last names, and even the remaining 9 profiles in my friends list now also inaccessible. What the heck happened to Friendster?
To add more weird thing, although I lost most of my friends list I still can see their updates in my profiles page but I can’t view them. Ok that’s great. Since most of my friends list set their profiles as private plus most of them I only keep in touch via Friendster, this error somehow give me difficulty to contact them because some of them are not here (Malaysia).
Since my friends list are really important to me and by losing them are just like losing contact to them, I emailed Friendster regarding this issue and hope they can fix it as soon as possible. But till today, 16 November 2008, I still didn’t get any reply from them. I know this is a free service anyway, but this kind of error really disappoint me.
I also asked my sister if she having the same problem as me, she said no. I saw her profile page and everything is fine. All her friends list is there. So my assumption is this problem occurred to certain profiles only, not all. But I also informed by some of my friends through YM, said that they also lost their friends list.
I don’t care too much if my friends list are just virtual friends, but they are really friends of mine and some of them I’ve not met about 5 years, and we only contact each other via Friendster. Its really a lost for me if I can’t get them all back. I hope Friendster can come out with solution for this problem. I logged in again into my profile today, but it seems the problem still unfix.
For a meantime, what can I do is to ask some of my friend to add me back to their friends list and ask their emails for me to add them back. But as I said before, most of them I only can get contact via Friendster and this would be hard time for me to search all them back and add them, not included those with private profiles. Haih, Friendster please fixes this asap.

As a result, the memory caching of data was affected. Since Friendster has 85 million users, the cache is taking a considerable amount of time to build. Once the cache has been completely built, all friends will re-appear.

usually it’s the problem with the database…it’s as simple as the databases haven’t sync up or when they were doing the maintenance, the database itself corrupt resulting loss of information…this happens sometimes…although it’s most unlikely.
